Fanart Friday: Mark Stokes

I received this special treat from twitter bud, very active Webcomic Alliance community member, and fellow creator Mark Stokes! I’m not sure what I love more– the way Mark draws my characters, or the way he (also) kept their alien-ness hidden from the reader while giving us a little tease (as I do with tentacles). Mark was even kind enough to send me the original, which I’ll gladly showcase in my studio!

When it comes to the webcomic “Zombie Boy” Mark is the BRAINS (get it? “Zombie”? Brains? oh nevermind) behind it. Mark used his brains to first develop Zombie Boy waaay back in 1987, in traditional comic book form (to be sold in, like, REAL shops!), and it has returned as a comic strip online! Centering around Morgan McCorkindale (aka Zombie Boy) who had a bit of an… er… “accident” on Voodoo Island, and tossing in wacky eccentric characters like Beatrice the psychic, Claustria the wiccan, or Gorr the, uh… dog, there is definitely no lack of interesting situations or subjects to be covered in this comic. Zombie Boy is certainly colorful in the literal AND figurative sense– don’t be surprised to see anything from dinosaurs to ghosts to demons to a frog pentagram. Yes, you read that right. Give Mark’s comic a read, if you haven’t already… you won’t be disappointed!

Fanart Friday: David Reddick

Rarely do I receive fanart from someone who “doesn’t need an introduction”, but one wonderful day I came across this on David Reddick’s Facebook page where he posts his sketchbook mini-masterpieces. I’ll admit, I squealed like a girl. (I AM a girl, but usually I avoid squealing at all costs.)

Okay, I said he doesn’t need an introduction, but I suppose that’s if you are submerged in the comic community the way I am. So, how about a glimpse at Mr. Reddick’s resume, just to give you an idea of his awesomeness:

  • Creator of The Legend of Bill, a wildly popular, fun, beautifully crafted fantasy webcomic about barbarians and dragons and warrior princesses, oh MY!
  • ALSO cartoonist for Trek Life, at CBS/Startrek.com… *ahem*, sci-fi fans. (tho now defunct, was a cult favorite!)
  • ALSO cartoonist for Rod and Barry, which is coincidentally about 2 cute purple aliens researching us humans (wow, that sounds familiar). I may just be crazy here, but something tells you me you guys would LOVE it. Unless you hate the color purple, of course. Then, stick to the aqua-green aliens like MY guys :0)
  • annnd finally, David is ALSO an employee of Paws, Inc… home of a little comic strip you may have heard of. Some fat orange cat name GARFIELD? yeah, that one. He works for GARFIELD. I am jealous of the daily Odie kisses he must receive.

So yeah, that guy… he drew this. Shower him with compliments, will ya?

Thanks so so so much, David. You rule, keep it up :0)

Fanart Fri- uh, Wednesday! – Jim Garvey

So, there’s few pictures that can completely and totally make my day, but here’s one of them:

Everyone, meet Jim Garvey, son of Don Garvey (wow, that sounded like a formal introduction out of Lord of the Rings). Don is the writer & colorist of Echo Rift, and I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Allentown Comic Con last fall. He bought, mush to my delight, both Z&F volumes, and gave them to his sons for Christmas. Next thing I know, Don is sharing a photo and story about his son’s new favorite comic over on Google+… how he listened to tales of Z&F on car rides, and finding Z&F Volume 1 in the sacred “bed stash” amongst other favorite comics. Now that’s some high praise!

Z&F are making the rounds yet again! This time, at the talented hands of new twitter bud Riley Schmitz! Fred’s dopey expression and the wicked cool shading are my favorite part of this fanart piece… so dramatic for my guys! I hope they can handle it.

Check out Riley’s comic “Burning Pages” over at his SmackJeeves page, or swing by his blog “Invade2Destroy” about comics and games… and some fun character designs.

Thanks so much Riley! An awesome piece that I’d be honored to showcase in Z&F Volume 3!

This One is For You Fellow Webcomic Creators!

As many of you know, I am a co-founder and member of the Webcomic Alliance, most well known for its podcast the Webcomic Workshop. This site and podcast helps other creators (as well as us) to create our comics more efficiently, with better writing, artwork and concepts. Well, I just got involved with another project, that can be a huge help to anyone starting out, going through a “dip”, and is serious about getting their webcomic a bigger and more devout readership.

Phil Hampton of the Comic Academy approached me a while back about doing an interview for the 2-part program he was developing. With the help of video tours, and many informative interviews with me and other comic creators like Ken Drab of Rick the Stick (also of the Webcomic Alliance ), Krishna Sadasivam of PC Weenies, and DJ Coffman of Bigfoot and Tiki (among other things).

You can now get this jam-packed program, regularly priced at $47, for the launch special STEAL of $7!! Just $7, c’mon you can handle that much, to give your comic creation endeavors a little boost, right!? Better hurry though, this deal is ONLY good through January 4th!
