The Manager!

Nettika REVEALED!

The Manager REVEALED!

More from Z&F Fan Darryl!

Many thanks to dedicated reader Darryl for sending me the answer(s) to the #1 question I receive: “What do the aliens look like under their costumes?” Since I’m a stubborn wuss, I refuse to show the true identities of the 4 alien characters, but I will gratefully post any fun ideas, sketches, guest strips and fanart if anyone wants to take a stab at it! Darryl took me up on the challenge… any other takers?

Also, this is the very first piece of fanart for the Manager character (pretty sure anyway), so thanks again Darryl!!!

Philly Comic Con 2012: Recap!

PhillyComicCon_2012-01

Wow. Just, wow.

Wizard World Philly Comic Con has outdone itself again. Or, maybe I out-did myself. This year’s 4-day convention now holds my new record for sales!

The Monday after a big convention like this is always surreal. As I sit at my day job, I wonder… “Did it really happen?” The highlight of my “career” as a cartoonist & illustrator are comic conventions and similar events- where I can meet the readers who keep me motivated, mingle with similar minds during and after the show, earn some cash from my passion in life, and refuel my momentum to make more kids book and comics! If all those key parts fall into place, the convention is considered a success, in my opinion!
Thursday was a shortened and slow day, but people were able to casually browse without the usual chaos. Friday brought in more of the typical crowds and sales picked up. Saturday and Sunday were both busy busy busy! I did the best on Sunday, also Kids Day, and saw a lot of the people I had met earlier come back for a purchase— which is the highest compliment if you ask me! Cold (immediate) sales are awfully flattering, but when a person needs time to mull over a purchase and compare it to what else is featured at an event, and they come BACK to your table, that’s just phenomenal!

Time for the Shout-Outs!

I saw many friends and readers at this convention, so I apologize in advance for those I may miss. My partner is crime, yet again, was TL Collins of Bullfinch, who is the Commission Master! I had a blast with him and his girlfriend Beth all weekend. Good buddy Erica Schultz of M3 came down and crashed my area multiple times to help and entertain! Z&F reader and local bud Ben Daniel stopped by and made my day by purchasing a Z&F Figurine! Across the way from my table was Chris Maverick (aka: “Mav”) of Cosmic Hellcats fame, and his colorful crew. Even bumped into my favorite Philly Comic Con neighbor (who lived across from me at my first show in 2010) Shawn Harbin of The Dungeon Comic. Thanks to Chris for also purchasing a figurine! The awesome picture above was taken by reader & comic-con-frequenter Megan Snyder, who stopped by to buy an Abby’s Adventures book for her daughter. The spectacular Stuff of Legend artist Charles Wilson even purchased Z&F Book 2, and I was thrilled to see some favorite kick-butt kids stop by to see me! All in all, a spectacular convention that gets better every single year. For those of you who have been thinking about exhibiting at Wizard World Philly, it’s a no-brainer if you can get here & stay here cheaply!

Want more on the show, outside of Artist Alley (where I was hidden away)? Check out the review by the Philadelphia Inquirer!

And for the kiddies, there’s the Abby’s Adventures kids book series, boasting FOUR books!

Friday, June 1, 2012 – 12 noon – 8pm

(scroll down to see my listing!)

This convention is chalk-full of celebs! William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Chris Hemsworth (THOR!), Bruce Campbell, even the great Stan “the man” Lee! Comic cons are so much more than comic books– get autographs, funny/geeky Tshirts or toys, tons of 80’s memorabilia, or just bring a camera & gawk at the costumes!!

HIGHLY suggest getting tickets online SOON if you are going.. the lines can get crazy! If you are not a fan of crowds (like me!) the best days to go are Friday or Sunday… and Sunday is KIDS DAY, they usually have lots of fun activities planned! I hope to see you there!

On Facebook? You can RSVP to the event HERE!

Wild Pig Show 2012 (sans actual pigs) RECAP!

This past weekend, I took to Piscataway, NJ to test the convention waters at the Wild Pig Show! It has that goofy name because the guy who runs it, Chris Eberle, owns a comic shop called Wild Pig Comics. So, no, there were no real pigs there.

But there certainly were lots of comics fans, and a friendly hotel staff! While the convention wasn’t one of my better ones as far as sales goes, it’s worth a second go-around to see how I fare at a 2nd or 3rd show. I enjoyed the clean set-up to the show; comic books lining the entire long hall with fun enormous posters, and the artist alley tables stretching down the center. I debuted my new AVENGERS poster (just in time for the movie release), and was showing off the new Z&F figurines as well! I even met a little girl, Caroline, who seemed like a mini version of myself: she loves Thundercats (old and new series), sported a Big Bang Theory T-shirt, and snatched up both Z&F volumes! My wonderful and talented neighbors Ian Glaubinger and Janine Frederick kept me entertained and I got to meet fellow family-friend creators Mark Mariano of “My Pal Mark” and Chris of the Chris O-Matic Show! Please take a moment to go gander at their amazing work!

My friend Don Smith wrote up a fantastic review of the show, be sure to check it out!!

Fanart Friday: Darryl and Riley!

Two great pieces to share with you guys today! Honestly, one of the most flattering moments as a cartoonist, is receiving fanart from people who .. like, willingly, want to draw your characters! It reminds me of when I started out and all I would do is draw the Peanuts characters, or Calvin & Hobbes, or Fox Trot, over and over. Imitation is the truest form of flattery, and that’s certainly true!

First off, a fun guest strip by twitter buddy Riley!

A little nod to Men in Black, but we all know Zorphbert has a mind-erasing device tucked away in that collar. Riley Schmitz, AKA “Invade2Destroy” on twitter, has been a passionate Z&F fan for a while now. With almost every update, I get complimentary tweets from Riley, brightening up my day each time! He’s one of those readers you just adore having around, because even just one little bit of good feedback goes a long way! Riley, obviously, also draws comics and you can look through some of his work HERE and HERE!

Next up: Portrait of Nettika by Email Pal Darryl!

I think I know Darryl’s favorite character now! Remember what I was saying about awesome readers who will give you feedback and keep you motivated? Well, I have another passionate fan in Darryl, who signed up for Z&F delivery in his email. (You can too, but the way.) Out of everyone who receives Z&F comics in their inbox, Darryl is the one I expect to hear back from on a regular basis. He is full of great questions and is dying to see the aliens out of their costumes! Sorry Darryl, but I’m thinking my own interpretation of the aliens will never live up to your imagination!

Many thanks to both Darryl and Riley for some fantastic fanart, which I will cherish and also have printed (with your permission) in Z&F Volume 3!
