Baltimore and SPX Recap

Hi all. First off, this will be a short article since due to working 2 conventions in a row, my immune system took a hit and now I have a bad cold/flu/something-or-another. Lesson learned for next year, my friends.

Baltimore, as always, is a great convention that only gets better. The crowds on Saturday were amazing, and the vibe was the usual perky excitement. The star of the show was the “baby hulk” as we called him, even though he was about 5 or 6. Most excited child ever, happy to pose for anyone and flex his little muscles. The after-party on Saturday at Pratte Street Ale House (3rd year in a row) was a great place to mingle and meet other creators, and I got to hang out with many friends I haven’t seen in a while. Didn’t earn quite what I did last year, but it was another successful comic con.

SPX, or Small Press Expo, was this past weekend in Bethesda, MD, and I was excited to see what an indie book expo would be like. As expected, the crowd (along with the exhibitors) donned a high percentage of hipster glasses… but the crowd strolled through the show floor at a casual pace, being very open to hearing our pitch and flipping through our books. I’m not sure if Z&F and my Abby kids book series, was quite what attendees came for, but my table mates Chris Flick of Capes and Babes, and Krishna Sadasivam of PC Weenies, hatched a plan. We offered 1 of each of our books in a great $30 deal, that a ton of customers took us up on. That, I think, it was made the show a success for me… I sold enough books that way, to pay off my expenses.  In fact, I sold out entirely of Z&F Volume 1!

Clipart FAIL: Back to School

We’ve doodled some awful sketches in our loose-leaf or hard-backed composition notebooks, but I’m sure many were MASTERPIECES compared to what awaits below.

DON’T: make fun of the kid with the deformed legs.

Sept. 15th- 16th, North Marriott Hotel– Small Press Expo!

Covering new territory this year, I am trying out a independent publishers book & comic arts expo, to see how well it treats Zorphbert and Fred and my kids book series. It’s one of the best in the US, along with APE in California. Basically, it’s Artist Alley at a comic con, without the celebs, the big publishers like Marvel or DC stealing all the attention. If you’re interested in checking out NEW comics, graphic novels, and collections… because there are wonderful diamonds on the rough as we al know… this is the event to attend! And you cannot beat the cheap ticket prices!

I’ll be splitting a table with good friends Chris Flick of Capes and Babes, as well as Krishna Sadasivam of PC Weenies, so we’ll have a TON of webcomic goodness to sell! Aliens! Technology! Crazy Werewolves! I think it’s good combo, don’t you? We’re even discussing a cool deal for avid webcomic readers who want to buy 1 book each from us! While I’ll have mostly my books, I’ll bring a couple figurines and some trinkets like buttons, pendants, and magnets too.

Mission Log: Summer

 9/11/12 Mission Log #2456

It is approaching the end of the Earthly seasonal cycle referred to as “summer”. Humans are still flocking to open water communes such as the over-crowded community cement hole “pool”, and the edges of the continent that feature grainy eroded rocks (sand) and the turbulent large water bodies (ocean). All this despite the fact that they install and pay for their homes to be mechanically cooled. Humans are also leaving their cooled homes to cook OUTSIDE, on hot low-end cooking structures fueled by fire-hot charcoal or straight-up fire. Some even more delusional humans leave their comfy neighborhoods to “live in nature” without any modern conveniences, and go “camping” as they call it. This seems illogical to me, but humans really seem to enjoy these hot outdoor excursions.

Earthlings: care to share a favorite “summer” pastime, and why you enjoyed making yourself uncomfortable in the name of “fun”?

 Team Cul de Sac Panel!

You may recall that a piece I submitted to this awesome project for Parkinson’ research was chosen to be in the Team Cul de Sac book for charity. Well, a bunch of us will be at the Baltimore Con, and will be congregating for a Panel! Yup, I’ll be testing my nerves and doing another panel, amongst good company! Come out and watch me have a nervous breakdown live and on stage! LOL

Here’s the info from the program:

Room 302-303
11:00-12:00 – Team Cul de Sac
When Richard Thompson, the creator of
the comic strip Cul de Sac, was diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease, his friend Chris
Sparks began a fundraising effort to honor
his friend. With Richard’s support, he
asked others to donate artwork featuring
the Cul de Sac characters for a Team Cul de
Sac book with proceeds going to The
Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s
Research. Now, join Chris Sparks and other members of Team Cul de Sac
as they discuss the project and their continuing efforts to
raise funds in Richard’s name.
