NEW Feature at Z&F!

I’d like to use this Thursday news post to remind you pet-lovers that there’s a new feature here at ZFCOMICS! Everyone loves to share stories and pictures of their cats or dogs, I know I abuse that tendency myself! Staying with this comic’s theme, I want to hear why YOUR dog or cat (or bird? or hamster?) is weird! Is it the goofy positions when they sleep? Or maybe what kind of odd routines they have with their food? Possibly the funny noises they make or how they bark or meow? Or even just what makes you laugh, no matter how late, or early in the morning it is… pets certainly have that ability, don’t they? Just tell me a story, send along a picture, add your name and city & state, and I’ll SPOTLIGHT it on a Thursday!

Head over to the contact page to attach a picture, and type in your story! Looking forward to meeting your weird-o pets….. who are probably ALIENS IN DISGUISE!

Mission Log: Halloween

10/22/12 Mission Log #5219

Now here’s a peculiar phenomenon… Halloween, originally called “All Hallow’s Eve”. As with many of the holidays we have studied, the history of the holiday has it’s roots in paganism, yet it’s now adopted by Christian religions. Much of the traditions on this day have a creepy undertone, and I can see why; long ago it was believed that souls wandered the planet until All Saints Day, Nov. 1st, on which they would move on to the afterlife. All Hallows Eve was their last change to get revenge on the living, Yes, that’s.. erm… creepy. But this is the reasoning behind all the costumes on this holiday- people disguised themselves so that their dead relatives wouldn’t haunt them. Now I know why “respecting your elders” is so important. No one likes being haunted. Be nice to old people, and you won’t have to buy a costume.

All this seems mythological and silly, however the TV Channels are littered with these ghost investigator shows, and ghost stories, and now being right around Halloween, all the classic “scary” movies are being played in an endless loop. It’s all very formulaic and unbelievable, yet people like to watch these movies or shows and get themselves all worked up on theories they claim to not believe in. Some people actually DO BELIEVE in spirits haunting certain buildings, communicating with the living with sound, sights, or even touch…. and typically, they’d rather them NOT be there. This is what I find the most peculiar: humans don’t want to believe in ghosts, yet they want to watch movies or TV shows that almost forces them to do just that, even if just for the span of the viewing.

Tell me Earthlings, do you have an “experiences” with these spirits that may or may not exist?

Photos from New York Comic Con 2012!

As promised, I’m sharing some of my favorite costumes and shots from this past weekend’s New York Comic Con, now the #2 comic convention in the US! Boasting more than 100,000 attendees, it’s COMPLETELY INSANE from beginning to end. No, I did not exhibit this year (though LOTS of people were asking me where my table was, lol), but it’s fun once in a while to take in a comic con as a fan, without the anchor that is your Artist Alley table getting in the way. I am reassessing if I should exhibit next year, however. I only came to the show on Sunday, so despite how crazy the pictures look, it was a bit subdued. My husband Rick joined me, and witnessed his first BIG comic con… he was a trooper and was happy to be able to test the Marvel Heroes MMO game. I think I enjoyed all the Lego creatures & characters that were all over the place and the Nintendo booths the most. The TMNT tunnel promoting the new cartoon series was pretty neat however! We did the whole tourist NY thing on Saturday, mastered the subway system, met up with a handful of creator friends for dinner & drinks, and had a memorable, insane, busy, active weekend!

Here you go, PICTURES!

Clipart FAIL: Pumpkins

My character in Z&F loves everything pumpkin- lattes, ice cream, pie…. and THAT much is a real-life fact. I LOVE me some pumpkin, which is why it disappoints me to see pumpkin clipart like… this…

DO NOT MESS WITH THE PUMPKIN-HEADS!

Yes. Yes, they are. Just not the way you draw them.

———————————————————————————-

Tiny head, tiny brain? A self portrait, I presume.

———————————————————————————-

Would YOU hug this? Yeah, thought so.

———————————————————————————-

Had Linus known the true identity of the Great Pumpkin, he would have ran AWAY, at top speed, from the pumpkin patch.

———————————————————————————-

Wishful thinking there, princess.

———————————————————————————-

Uhhhhh naked carrot-lover gets his fix by scaring gaurdian dog? I guess?

It shouldn’t take this long to process a piece of clipart. I mean, it’s CLIPART, not a warped one-page storybook.

———————————————————————————-

It’s a thinker.

and I’m still thinking.

———————————————————————————-

Now it’s YOUR turn!

This one actually reminded me of a pumpkin-carving storyline here at Z&F. But what do you think would be a great caption for this guy?

Fanart by David Hurley!

Another fantastic fanart sketch from buddy David Hurley of Don’t Pick the Flowers, which features a huge colorful cast of the wacky people, animals, even aliens(!!) you have seen. You just never know what you’re gonna get with DPTF, as the ORIGINAL line went in Forrest Gump. Life is like “Don’t Pick the Flowers”, right David? Thanks so much for this piece, it certainly is an excellent rendition of “my guys”.

Oh yeah, David did an interview with me a while back, why not swing over and check that out again!

I head off to New York City this weekend, to bask in the colorful glow that is New York Comic Con. Bringing the husband, aka “Male Owner”, to fully break him in to the “comic con experience” and introduce him to some wonderful people. This convention is a tradition for me now, a tradition of nonstop FUN! I just hope I make it out alive. Keep an eye out for pictures! I’m not exhibiting, but attending is fun as I actually get to absorb the atmosphere beyond the 8 feet or so I get at a table.

Mmmmmaybe a special NYCC Costume post next week, hmmmm? We can vote on the winner?
