Mission Log: Sports Fans

10/02/12 Mission Log #4897

Every autumn it’s the same… the owners lose their minds over this baseball “World Series” (not that the cities involved span out any further than North America). I’ll admit I don’t quite fathom a game that involves running in circles, trying to hit a tiny ball with a skinny stick, with the sweeping notion of “going home”…. but sports fans in general are simply highly irrational brainwashed peons. No offense.

Speaking just of North America (which, again, believes itself to be “THE WORLD” as pompous as that is), there are essentially a couple sports teams per large metropolis. Typically, people “root for” the teams connected to the city in the closest proximity to where they were born. In my research, I have found that this is because decades ago the players on said teams were ALSO from that general area, so presumably spectators might even personally know a couple of the athletes on these teams. However, this has changed over time as trading athletes became popular, once the leagues took over the sport and capitalized on making it a full corporation.  Now, the teams aren’t run by the players or the coaches, but by money…. although the guise is still there. Fans still cheer for their closest city’s teams, even though the athletes are simply puppets being controlled by the league and passed around to the highest bidder every so often. I would even go as far as to say the athletes care very little for the city they play in… they simply play for the city that pays them the most.

Haverford/Havertown Day, at the Craft Fair!

BESTEST BLOCK PARTY EVER!

Just a quick note to say I will be exhibiting in the craft fair section of the annual Haverford Day festivities! I’ll have all my regular goodies for Zorphbert & Fred and Abby’s Adventures, and my friend Jenn of JennySold will be joining me showing off her awesome crafts and knitted apparel!

If you are in the Philadelphia area, this is a great event as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of Haverford being incorporated as a “first class township”, my city Havertown at the center of the celebration! Haverford was actually founded in the 1680’s, one of the OLDEST in Pennsylvania!

This annual event entails live music, craft tables galore, kids activities & rides, a parade, tons of awesome food, and ice skating at the landmark Skatium! Last year, fire jugglers entertained us, and there’s always something going on! It’s a great cheap way to go out an enjoy the autumn weather!

RSVP on Facebook!

If you’re on facebook, let me know you’re coming!

Clipart FAIL: Politics

With the election in full-gear, I figured a clipart.com search for ELEPHANTS and DONKEYS was required. Not quite as ugly as the election itself, but pretty ugly nonetheless.

Republicans are against abortion… so they can…. EAT YOUR BABY!

Tips & Tricks: Convention Resources

My number 1 question here at ZFCOMICS is “what do the aliens look like under their costumes?”, which I have answered way too many times, but my number 2 most-asked question usually has to do with tabling at comic cons. Where did I get my banners? Or my book rack? Or bookmarks? I have repeatedly pointed people to my article on Webcomic Alliance, where I flush out my secret list of “Convention Resources”, but I figured it was time to share this info here, for any fellow creators who were wondering.

Mission Log: Evolving Politics

9/25/12 Mission Log #3117

I have noticed the abundance of political discussion both around the house here and on television. Humans of this country are preparing to elect a leader for the next 4 Earth years. While it has been brought to my attention that political discussion tends to incite excitement and anger, I figure YOU humans reading this may have evolved passed uncivilized behaviors and can look at the election logically and rationally. As you know, Fred and I had our fair share of involvement in the 2008 election, and little seems different this time around. The real issues that affect the country as a whole are set aside for the smaller issues, mainly because they seem to get more of a reaction. Each side fires up their followers, the ones who would follow them regardless, and the people in the middle who have not come to a decision yet (if they really exist) are left listening to the same looped noise. Despite the fact that most can agree the government itself is flawed and this “Congress” is proving to be nothing more than a black hole for any intended change, the American people are convinced that 4 years with “The Other Guy” in office will be nothing short of a mitigated disaster. This thinking, of course, is lead by the endless infuriating television ads and media portrayal. Each of the main candidates tells us why the other guy is the absolute worst choice, but forgets to explain how they will help this country with its many and extensive problems. It’s essentially a race between Dr. Doomsday and Captain Apocalypse.

Many people vote for a candidate based on one issue that affects them personally, rather than choose the best candidate to run the entire country. Since the parties are so solidified in their stances, these people can just vote for the same party every year without much new analysis. Few Americans actually do their research… those who do realize the whole process is pointless, because the system is set up to fail, to allow for minimal ACTUAL evolution.

When a machine breaks down and only yields poor results, it becomes apparent to me that a complete overhaul is needed.  While I’m sure you know by now we’re not here to “take over the world”, if I could alter something about the political system to allow it to work more like our impeccably-efficient technology, I would first do away with the labels. The parties- Democrat and Republican- aren’t what they used to stand for, and all they are doing is further dividing the country. If there’s no “party” to fund, no label to stand behind or pressure to conform, the politicians simply become people with ideas… ideas that American voters would have to gather data about and make an intellectual decision on which ideas are best to use as a foundation for change.

Just my outside opinion. Thank goodness we’re not even native to this planet, because having to vote for one of these party puppets would be a bigger headache than helping “Bedazzle” Fred’s sock tail. Okay, maybe not.

So, American Earthlings, what ONE change would you make, if you could “take over the world” of politics and create a better government and electoral process?
