Clipart FAIL #1

As I mentioned previously, I have this great idea for a weekly blog post called Clipart FAIL. Working as a graphic designer, I come across many horrific clipart illustrations that either baffle or just plain insult me, as a professional with what I consider to be a decent talent in illustration. It boggles the mind that these people got PAID for this piece of ****, and that there’s a panel of judges somewhere in the online clipart field, who looked at this piece of **** and said, “Yeah, that’s good, pay the man/woman!” Ugh.

For example, this is something that was stumbled upon this week when searching for the keyword “ribbon”. I realize it’s supposed to be a rabbit’s foot, but c’mon people.. LOOK at what you’re drawing before you submit it.

rabbitfootFAIL.

————-

So, every Monday (or so) join me in making fun of these little golden nuggets of shame. Today I will share the “birthday” findings, which usually end up on birthday signs that hang all over the cubicle of the birthday girl in my Art Department.

First off:

birthday girl

Is this a hideously ugly deformed little girl, or an old lady with a very immature taste in wardrobe?… doesn’t help that she’s stumbling towards her cake (on the floor, of course) like a half-decayed zombie. With a hunchback. FAIL.

noface

“Faces? Who needs to draw faces? Screw this ***, just pay me already.” FAIL.

baby

Yes, this was listed under “birthday”. Is drawing a diaper asking too much? There’s no need for this, folks. FAIL.

baby2

I know it’s Baby Stretch Armstrong and all, but at least they drew in a diaper. Give credit where it’s due. Well…yeah…okay, nevermind. I take it back. Stop drawing already. FAIL.

bday_santa

…….. what? Why is Santa…..? What is that yellow/green booger thing…….? Uhhhhh…. FAIL.

rat

AUUUUGHHHHHHH! FAIL.

alien flower

On your birthday, wish for this thing to not show up at your party. FAIL.

clown

If clowns don’t scare you, this design surely will. FAIL.

wtf

Someone……. anyone, please explain WHAT THE HELL is going on here. Ow, ow ow, it hurts to look at it. FAIL.

Fanart Friday: Sonny Chiba

ZORPHBERT-AND-FRED

This week’s “risqué” “Fanart Friday” is from a long-time fan, twitter friend, and facebok pal,  Sonny Chiba. If you heard my interview with TGT webcomics, you may recall someone distracting me from the chat room, by keeping me informed about the Cavs playoff game.. which I deliberately turned off so I could FOCUS on the interview. Yup, that was Sonny. Love ya anyway, dude. Nice Lebron tribute in this piece!

Anyhoo, Sonny is the creator of the amusing and frankly- quite random, “Stiffs”, which a webcomic detailing the lives of lower paid workers who work in a large Disney themed museum in New York City.. which he describes as “Clerks meets Boondocks”. If that doesn’t peek your interest, well…. what’s wrong with you? ;0)

OMG, Check it Out: Epic Fail

Yes, boys and girls, it is time yet again for another Z&F Plug. The latest on the list is Amy Letts’ “Epic Fail”, a fantasy webcomic that actually goes right in line with a very recent LOTR storyline right here on zfcomics! There were many inspirations that lead Amy to create “Epic Fail”, including:

•  “Through the Dragon’s Eye,” a BBC Look and Read production

• The Dragonlance novels

• Renaissance Fairs

• D&D and similar role-playing games

So if you dig dwarves, elves and other fantasy characters mixing it up with the likes of Kings and Knights, go check out:

Amy’s colorful cast of characters include 2 humans, the golden-hearted and slightly ditzy Martin, and the rough-around-the-edges Dirk, whose determination and devotion sometimes gets the best of him. Follow these 2 up with the complicated strong-willed character of Amuletts, a Sylvan Elf, who has sworn to serve Loki, the Norse God of Fire. Amuletts’ intent is to help people, but by pushing them to take risks and generally being a nuisance, but she is highly regarded for her great skill with spells. Don’t forget the tough dwarf Clodin, and the mystical and compassionate elf Tinuvielle, to round out the cast.

The character-driven storyline and classic Renaissance hero aspect bring to mind the best RPG’s I played as a teen: Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, with a little LOTR and D&D mixed in. Antics abound as the story progresses, and you learn to love and hate Amuletts, who is easily the most memorable character. The artwork lends itself to the fantasy theme well, and with only having 25 pages, you can easily dive right into the story without feeling overwhelmed. A decent read, for all you fantasy nerds who like to play make-believe ;0)

Fanart Friday: Antoine Gagnon

Zorphbert-and-Fred-20090810

Fellow WebcomicPlanet Collective member, Antoine of “Drunken Fools” fame, sent this to me recently. What a great birthday gift, intentional or not, lol. Inspired by the Contest I hosted a couple weeks back, he gave Z&F’s “true identities” a twist… how funny! Thanks a TON, Antoine!

Antoine is the drunker master-mind behind “Drunken Fools” … a hilarious webcomic about a bunch of friends in an age group I just entered myself- the thriving thirties! Except, for this particular group, maybe less thriving, and more partying like they’re still college kids. Ah well, it results in crazy-hazy moments, most of which I didn’t even do while I was in college… so I’ll relive my college years vicariously through this crazy cast. And in retrospect, probably be thankful I avoided some of those embarrassing moments, lol.

A Bonus Fanart!

From Byron Wilkins, just for my birthday! How awesome is he? He’s done fanart for Z&F in the past, but this one’s so personal, it really made me smile.

fanart

One of the most popular humor comics on drunkduck is Life & Death by “Joff” or Jonathan Oliver, centering around the grim reaper (whose real name is Steve, who knew?) and his favorite weapon: the cricket bat. I just checked, and dude’s almost up to 700 comics. 700. Sheesh.

Anyway, this was “only” for his 400th strip, and Z&F made it into the mix! Can you find ’em? It’s a bit like Where’s Waldo. How flattering, thanks John/Joff. This is only a snippet of the entire update, you see that by clicking below:
