OMG, Check it out!: 1977 The Webcomic

It’s time again for another webcomic review/plug/shout-out. This one’s another for adult eyes only, boys and girls. I don’t want to blamed for child-corruption. Everyone, meet W. Byron Wilkins, the creator of “1977” the webcomic.

Take one look at that banner and you can figure out exactly the premises of this comic: Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll! The 70’s baby, as well remember it (or maybe not so much anymore). That really does pretty much sum it up… and simplicity can be a very good thing, especially when you have few brain cells left to hold an attention span. No, no, you do not have to be a stoner or alcoholic to enjoy this comic, because it’s universally flat-out FUN to read. Take “That 70’s Show”, age the characters a bit and throw all the stupid TV-censorship nonsense out the window. Add a dash of surreal mini-adventures that have no base in reality, and a handful of sexy strong women to boot, and you have “1977 the webcomic”.

Basic premises (beyond Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll!, I mean): 2 stoner goofball guitarist roommates live in a house paid for by the Q-tip inventor (father to one of them), they meet 2 hot chicks who HAPPEN to play drums and sing, and they form a band! Ear-to-ear grins ensue.

You can tell the author is indeed “writing what he knows”. Everything, from the clothes, to the slang, to the music and pop culture references, IS 1970’s. Speaking as someone who only lived one year of her life in the 70’s, I cannot speak from personal experiences, but I have no doubt what the author lays out here is “solid” …well, maybe not with the whole free-Q-tip-house deal (how flippin’ sweet is that? Man, I wish!).. but I enjoy the retro feel, and I know it’s legit. It’s so unique to the webcomic genre, Byron has stuck his flag in (no sex pun there, I swear) and claimed ownership!

I feel strangely connected to these characters, doing their own thing, trying to make something of themselves creatively. ‘Course I have a FT job while I “do my own thing”, but still… they have a “night gig” just as I do. Rock on, guys and gals, rebellious and bursting with creativity… I can definitely relate. Gotta give Byron props- he rocked out then, and he’s doing it again now, in 21st century style!

But beyond the sappy side of why I enjoy this comic, it delivers just what most anything from the 70’s does: unassuming, lighthearted, chemically-influenced hilarity. Just what you need, as you stumble into your office job every monday morning and down another 3 cups of coffee…. a roll of the eyes, a snicker, and some good healthy T&A.

Am I a slacker updating only 2x a week now?– At least Priest Revan thinks I’m not! Thanks for the shout-out man, glad to know some people out there respect the amount of work I put into Z&F!

And I only update 2-3x a week, imagine if I was syndicated and had to do 6 “dailies” and a “sunday”… That’d be crazy! At least with a full-time job. Here’s to webcomics!

Mr. “Priest Revan” over on drunkduck treats the world to a wonderfully adorable comic called “2’s a Company”. If you like animals and “furry” type comics, you’ll love it. This was one of the first comics on DD that I stumbled on, and I have seen this guy improve vastly over time. I know he’ll only keep getting better, so watch out!

If you’re a cartoonist, you have probably thought about illustrating a children’s book. I took 2 kids book classes in art school that I loved. A decent writer/cartoonist can create a kids book, it’s just getting a publisher to pick you up that’s the pain. That, or knowing you will have a long, rocky & expensive road of self-promoting, while trying to draw/write NEW books for your series. It’s tricky.

Well, about 3 years ago, my mom approached me with a script from a coworker of hers who wrote some stories, but needed an artist. I figured, what the heck. The story was cute, it had a moral, and was relevant to little girls today, plus she had a good 3 or 4 other ideas for future books. The writer & I tooled away with character designs and over a couple months, I hammered out the first book, “Abby’s Adventures: Picture Day”.  Abby loses her tooth the morning of her school picture day, and innocent cute hilarity ensues as she tries to find ways to hid her gaping hole in her smile (including sticking a mini marshmallow in there, lol). We were both very happy with the final piece and packaged it up for publishers, optimistic and probably naively so.

Then reality sunk in. Big publishers do not want a “package deal”. Publishers want writers to send in their work, and illustrators send their samples, & then they get to play puppeteer and match ‘em all up. This of course leads to some writers not being very happy with how an illustrator depicted their characters, but at that point, the writer has no say. The old “You want it published or not?” deal. (My writer has friends in the business with this very issue- the majority of the books she’s not happy with). It’s very similar to some of the headaches that comes with being picked up by a syndicate. “You want to play in the big leagues, you gotta play by our rules– we know best, not you”.

Fast forward 2.5 years, and out of the blue, my writer stumbles on a small publisher who loves the book, the series. She has 2 girls, who adore Abby and want MORE! Just from 1 book! A flurry of reformatting the book, size adjustments, logo changes, and other revisions.. And POOF. It’s on amazon.com and listed with Barnes & Noble. And I have a pile of stories to illustrate, haunting my every spare moment. The thing with a series is, you cannot leave people wanting more for too long, or they lose interest. So, these next books in the series need to be cranked out ASAP. All I have to say is thank goodness for coffee, red bulls, and my flex-time work schedule. Oh, yeah, and my love for cartooning!

“Abby’s Adventures” is still in it’s baby phase. It could take off with the right promotions and advertising… And if I can friggin’ get these new books done quickly enough. We’re finding some promotional ideas will only work once we have a fanbase, and others are simply too expensive and time-consuming. It’s all about baby steps, and word-of-mouth at this point. But it’s a start, and there’s nothing more flattering than a rave review from a 5 year old who wishes Abby were her best friend!

And now for some sneak peeks at what I have been toiling over for months now…. (and why Z&F is only updating 2x a week):

This one I adore. It hangs on the wall at my office, people ask me about it all the time. Amy Hankins of “Antcomics” and “Compozerz” definitely out-did herself on this one. She tackled my characters and reinvented them in her own style seamlessly. Fantastic, and thanks so much Amy!

Check out her awesome artwork. I’m jealous of her marker mastery.

Call for Fanart!

I kinda hate asking for fanart from people, I’m much happier when it’s just offered- a pleasant surprise! But such is the life of a cartoonist…. we need a vacation sometimes, and the best filler is some fanart from our wonderful fans. The bonus is it’ll get the creator some traffic, and I will also leave a little plug/review of their own work.

But let’s make this fun, give it a “theme”. I know this always makes coming up with an idea easier! So… *drumroll*….

CONTESTheader

That’s right, what do YOU think Z&F really look like under those costumes? It’s the question I get asked the most, and I always say I’ll never show them in their “true form”.. it’s my gimmick, and I know my alien design would never live up to my reader’s imaginations anyway! Of course, I have shown a tentacle from time to time, but never in their entire alien form. You can submit a full strip with gag, or a character design for both Zorphbert and Fred, or a picture of clay sculpture… whatever you like! Go crazy!

As a side note: hate to disappoint, but this does not mean I will start drawing Z&F out-of-costume. I’m sticking to my guns on this, I think the comic works best when the reader sees Z&F as half-alien, half-dog.. like they are “in” on the joke, without being too familiar with the other side of the story. Gives the strip an element of mystery and intrigue. Or that’s just me BS-ing ;0)

Yeah, yeah, what do I win?

Oh yes, since this is a “contest”, that means there has gotta be a winner! And a prize to bribe you into playing, LOL. The creator of the best alien design, as picked by yours truly, receives a package of hot-off-the-presses convention swag, complete with a sketchcard with whatever character you choose, ANNNNNNNNND a cameo in the next Z&F strip (of either yourself or your character). Pretty cool huh?

Cool, gimmi the details…

I will be on vacation from July 19th until the 26th, down in North Carolina at a big beach house a bunch of us rented, enjoying a much needed break. Well, knowing me, I’ll bring my Tablet PC anyway and still do some work, but not as much as usual. ANYHOO, this means the deadline is Friday, July 17th. I will post the entries during this week, and the following week if I get that many entries. Send your entries to: dawn @ zfcomics DOT com

Now for some alien inspiration:

ha ha, Sam Cassell really DOES look like an alien. Freak!
