Baltimore Comic Con: Recap

Here I am, still kinda recovering Sunday evening from a jam-packed Saturday.. but it was totally worth it. I made the last-minute decision to drive down to Baltimore from Philly for 1 day of the Baltimore Comic Con. Did I have a book to sell? No. Did I have a table to promote Z&F? No. Yet again attending as a fan, but this time I had a plethora of comic creators to meet, hang out with and I returned with a bag full of new comics to read! I’m feeling like I am becoming “part of the scene”, some of these creators recognize me now… hopefully they don’t think I’m a stalker.

The ride down was traffic-free, until 3 blocks away from meeting up with a fellow webcomicplanet collective member, Dave DeMason of Unbearable Bears. Enter: the Batimore Marathon:

Eventually, we made it to the Con from Dave’s house. The Con gets bigger every year, and it was pretty busy! Very “creator friendly”, as the Hollywood aspect was diminished (no movie stars from Marvel flicks, less of the “Big Guys”, more of the actual artists and writers). Just a great atmosphere altogether.

Then, of course, there was the creators I got to meet:

Howie Noel from Tara Normal & Mr. Scootles (who, by the way, is the most awesomely nice guy!)

Danielle Corsetto of “Girls With Slingshots”, with McPedro! Cool chick, I must say.. pre-ordered her new book! I swung by and said a quick hello to her neighbor Joel Watson of Hijinks Ensue, as well.

A squinty Dave Kellett of Sheldon (who managed to sell his entire collection of books- all 6- to the customer right before me! holy be-jesus!). I visited with Brad Guigar as well, forgot to get a picture! Awesomely friendly dude.

The guys from 3rd World Studios, including Brock Heasley of Superfogeys, whom I have always wanted to meet in person…. what a guy! Totally deserving of that nomination for “artist congeniality” for the WCRCA’s. Not to mention other categories, of course.

Of course, had to meet up with my buddy TL Collins of Bullfinch, and his friend Brian Smith (aka “Smitty”), a terrific illustrator of various fun projects you can find here.

And, last but not least, had to get a group photo with my fellow  WebcomicPlanet Collective members who were attending or exhibiting. Left to right, (after me) is Ken Drab of “Rick the Stick”, Chris Flick of “Capes n Babes”, and Dave DeMason of Unbearable Bears. All such fantastic guys! (I think I was trying to look as tall as Ken here, failed miserably). However, I missed seeing Alan Evans of “Rival Angels”, things just got too busy!

Another duo I didn’t get a picture with, but I always seem to run into at conventions, is the Fraim Brothers. Turns out they went to the same art school as me- Tyler School of Art near Philly. Small world. These 2 works on various projects, but their amazing art cannot be missed– check it out here. My favorite from back my drunkduck days was America Jr.

After the con, the WebcomicPlanet members met up at a nearby bar called the Nest, where I also met Rob Stenzinger and his wife Kate (who took this picture). Rob is the creator of Art Geek Zoo. I also met Tyler James, not pictured here, who works on a handful of different comics, his portfolio is found here.

And, oh yeah, Baltimore is pretty neat little city:

Thanks to everyone I met, for the terrific time! Hope to see you guys around the next time!

Baltimore Comic Con

BCC

Hello all. I have a last-minute announcement! It’s becoming tradition that I decide at the last minute to attend a Comic Con, and this time it’s the Baltimore Comic Con. Yeah, I knew about it months ago, yeah it’s only 2 hours away from where I live near Philly, yeah the thought “Gee, I should attend that, or better yet, actually get a table and promote Z&F” ran across my mind, but lack of money and time made me forget. However, seeing how many of my favorite webcomic artists will be there, and that %$#@ conscious of mine that says “You’ll regret it, dummy!” made me change my mind.

‘Course it’s too late to get a table, but attending as a fan is always a blast anyway. I usually pass out a ton of bookmarks, postcards and mini comic collections anyway, so that’s something. Anyway, I’d prefer to wait until I have an actual book in print to sell, to get a table like a “grown-up” cartoonist, LOL. I know Brock Heasley of Superfogeys fame will be there with my bud TL Collins at the 3rd World Studios table. Howie Noel of “Tara Normal” and “Mr. Scootles” will also be there, excited to meet him. Of course the Half Pixel/webcomics.com guys, Danielle Corsetto of “Girls with Slingshots”, and Jennie Breeden of “Devil’s Panties” as well. Not to mention a slew of my fellow Webcomicplanet Collective members like Ken of “Rick the Stick” and Dave of “Unbearable Bears”. It’s gonna be one heckuva geek-fest!

If you are going as a fan or as an exhibitor, please let me know! I’m making up my list of people to meet up with! Look for me in a bright green Z&F Tshirt (if I can get the Tshirt made in time) and the signature red spikey hair! (yes, just like my avatar).

Z&F Improvement: Your Voting Results!

First off, a big THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in and offered up some advice for how to improve “The Zorphbert & Fred Experience”. I tried to come up with every possible way to improve a webcomic… except, long after I posted the poll, I realized I should have added “reader interaction” as it’s an important ingredient being online. Ah well. Anyway, here’s the results:

chart

As much as I appreciate the majority of the response giving me a thumbs up on everything,  I am a perfectionist and always looking for a way to improve. Thus, I will take the next couple higher ranking suggestions. After this storyline ends, I will attempt full color again… see if I can work out a compromise to save myself time to do each comic in color. I will also pay more attention to the sci-fi aspect of the comic (spice up storylines with that kind of thing), and work harder on better punchlines.

Thanks again for your opinions, they are greatly appreciated. Together with my readers’ help I hope to take Z&F to new levels. This right here, is what makes webcomics a terrific medium, and a definite PRO compared to traditional “ancient” newspaper comics.

You’ll note there is a brand new poll up now, so get to it! ;0)

Clipart FAIL #5

logo

If you follow me on twitter or are friends with me on facebook, you may have seen that Rick and I were lucky enough to attend the Division-clinching Phillies game, and if you live around Philly, we apparently got a close-up on local TV stations, when they panned the crowds. It was a blast. So, to hype up the baseball playoffs, for this week’s Clipart FAIL I decided to use the keyword baseball. Let’s see what turned up….

21416720

a very odd assortment of items.. including a red…. thing? wtf is that?

FAIL.

22097166

Yeah, it’s an alien baseball player, that is weird in itself. But the part that cracks me up is that he’s chewing tobacco too. You’d think ceatures of higher intelligence would know better.

FAIL.

15756471

I…. don’t… get… it….

FAIL.

15824666

THAT is supposed to be a glove? wow. Just…. wow.

FAIL.

21351658

My brain exploded from a flood of too many sarcastic comments. I’ll have to pass on this one.

FAIL.

22091766

Dear Clipart Artists Everywhere:

Not everything needs a smily face. Especially not things without faces to begin with. STOP IT.

FAIL.

21444156

Alien Lobster Baseball Players? Really?

FAIL.

15754576

There’s nothing I can say here that can be published on a generally family-friendly site.

FAIL.

15755089

A round of applause for the The Amazing Amputee Bat-Swallower! Or not.

FAIL.

Clipart FAIL #4

Attack of the duck! Don’t ask me why, but the boss wanted me to turn his brother into a cartoon duck for somethingoranother. A perfect time to collect more clipart disasters.

duck1

Anyone else flashing to those goofy flamingos in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland? Right. Flamingos. Not duck.

FAIL.

duck3

Not sure which is more confusing- the drinking, the smoking, the eye patch or the hat. Or, for that matter, the dead duck. Charming.

FAIL.

duck4

Cannibalistic Duck? Wearing yellow shoes but of course. Always the signature of a cannibalistic duck.

FAIL.

duck5

Yeah, I have no idea what that is either. I imagine the keyword-taggers at clipart.com threw a dart at a chart of animals and gave this “masterpiece” the keyword “duck”. ‘Cuz they didn’t have a clue either.

FAIL.

duckfat

I find this guy comical. I wonder what he must have eaten out of that little bowl to fill him up that much. Who knew ducks had belly buttons?

FAIL.

ducktarzan

Okay. So. There once was a duck named Tarzan. He ate only bananas, and swooped down on tiny elvish children who ate too much candy. The end.

FAIL.

duck7

This is just unfortunate.

FAIL.

duck6

WHAT is with all the duck-massacre clipart? And why does this duck seem perfectly content with this?

FAIL.

15263788

The “juiciest” clipart disasters are buried in the last couple pages when you search for a keyword. Usually, black and white lineart only. That’s where I found this. I am at a loss of words, folks, so I leave the caption for it up to you in your comments….. ready? go!
