So, yeah…. Honeymoon in Jamaica

Honeymoon_Jamaica-36

Like how all my wedding blog posts start with “So, yeah…”?

What a difference between Philly and Jamaica, right now. We left 20 degree temps, and got off the plane into 80+ degrees and beautiful weather. Even when it rained it was beautiful. And it does seem to rain almost every day.. just a little.. in Jamaica. Rick and I stayed at the Jewel Resort near Dunn’s River Falls. Not that we have any point of reference, it being our first time at a resort, but it was FANTASTIC. The food was good, the staff was friendly and fun, the room was perfect, and we even got bumped up to “ocean view” upon arrival. They bring the newcomers rum punch as you wait in the lobby to get your key. The bartenders are a fun bunch, and will go out of their way to do things like bring your favorite drink to you in the hot tub, or suggest fun new drinks to try (like the “Jamaican Smile”). I know I said the food was good, but I have to explain that further. The common element to the restaurants at the Jewel is you get to choose an appetizer, a salad, a soup, an entree and a dessert at each place. And the portions are so perfect, this is actually not as much food as it sounds. Just a taste of everything. The breakfast buffet has every breakfast food you could wish for, plus some Jamaican specialties to try out! Seriously, a wonderful resort. Seriously.

So yeah… we got married.

Greetings everyone! It took a little time to fully realize it, but we did in fact get married and enjoyed every second (that we can remember) of our big day! Now we just have to get used to calling each other “husband” and “wife”… we may stick to “Dawn” and “Rick” for a while and ease ourselves in. Heck, “male human” and “female human” could work too, as endearing as that is, LOL.

Happy CoupleWow, I really was a “bride”, huh? I think I pulled it off fairly well, considering my lack of femininity and desire to have the stereotypical big white wedding. I was amazed I could even get to sleep the night before, but I have good friends Pete & Jenn to thank for that. The night prior, they took us out for a fantastic Greek dinner at Kanela in Philly, followed by one of the best comedy shows I have ever seen: Louis CK at the Academy of Music! We were too busy laughing our collective butts off to worry about the impending wedding. That was such a terrific gift.. the gift of SANITY.

So, yeah.. I’m Getting Married and All…

I never wanted to get married.

Tomboy Dawn, circa 1986

I mean, when I was a kid, I never envisioned a wedding. If you asked me if I wanted to get married one day, I probably would have thrown acorns at you from atop the tree I climbed. Heck, I never even dated until I got out of college. I was always too busy drawing comics, pitching on a softball team, or playing pick-up basketball with the neighborhood fellas. Dating while in school seemed to just be a way to gather MORE baggage. That, and the fact that flirting was a foreign concept to me and most of the guys I ended up liking were already in the “friend zone”, so it was too late to pursue anything. Always the tomboy, never the bride.

But, in 2003, the glorious internet brought Rick to me. Well, to a New Jersey diner, where we met and had a Sunday dinner after chatting online for months. I wondered about that “friend zone”, and if I should attempt flirting (it’s usually not a very pretty sight). Fortunately for my oblivious self, Rick handled everything exactly the way I needed him to.  He romantically swept me off my feet with “Well, I like you, so you’re just gonna have to deal with that.” After several minutes of shock, I delt with it.

As you may have read earlier, my trip to the New York Comic Con was a lot of fun… a like a reunion of old friends who never actually met each other. As we sat around at a local diner or waited on a city corner, some of the conversations between us geeky webcomic creators would have been nice to record and share with others of our breed. The instant connection and ease of interaction is something we all noted… as if we have finally found “our people”. Too bad we don’t live closer together (Irma “Sweden” Erikson, I’m looking at you, girl.)

NYCC Live Photo Blog!

Have to say, if it weren’t for the people I had the pleasure of finally putting a face to their twitter avatar (if that made sense), I’m not sure I would have had that much fun at NYCC. But do not take it the wrong way… the con itself was a tremendous success, and the people I spoke to who exhibited said business was good for the most part. But I, personally, am not good with crowds… and this was not the usual busy con.. this was jam-packed full, cannot do more than a baby-step shuffle to get anywhere, call-the-fire-marshal- we’ve-gone-over-capacity type of crowded. That type of thing drives me nuts, I get so stressed, I’m less likely to stop at a random table and explore new comics and meet new people. My goal at that point becomes “Get from Point A to Point B without screaming or injuring another human being or Na’vi-looking cos-player”. So, I basically saw the people I came to see, and looked for the open-air section to recoup. But like I said, that’s just me.

So, a big THANK YOU and SEE YA NEXT YEAR to the peeps I got to meet. Howie, Tom, Marc, Irma, John, Wit (Mike), and the 2 Brads.. you guys are awesome and I’ll be stalking, er, seeing you again soon! Heard of these awesome people? Check out their work:

Tom Racine

Marc LaPierre

Irma Erikson

Mike Witmer

HC Noel (Howie)

Some notes:

  • For some odd reason, the exhibitors with booths did not get tables. Or chairs. This came as surprise to many, who had to run out and BUY a table, or spend god-awful amounts of money on renting one. Artist Alley exhibitors did get tables. Something to keep in mind.. as if you get your own table/chairs, as asinine as that may sound.
  • This lack of tables lead to some drastic measures. Two of my friends had the tables they bought or rented STOLEN. Right from their booth. Such a shame! This is really an issue the convention coordinators should amend ASAP.
  • Good things to bring/wear: Swag bag, water bottle and snacks, comfortable shoes, hand sanitizer, gum, charger for cell phone, and even a battery back-up for iPhones (these venues suck the life out of your phones), asprin, taser for the annoying aisle-hoggers (KIDDING, kidding.)
  • If I go to NYCC next year, I WILL have a table (literally as well, in Artist’s Alley). If only to have my own little space to hide from the insanity. But also to pimp Z&F!

Pictures, anyone?

And here’s a quick video of the demo by THE Joe Kubert, drawing his own Hawkman! Was a pleasure to watch him at his mastered craft… the man don’t even NEED pencils anymore.
