Baltimore Comic Con 2013

Convention-BCC2013

It’s Finally (almost) Here!

It’s my favorite show, Baltimore Comic Con! And it’s NEXT weekend! Why is it my favorite? Well, I love the size- it’s not too big nor too small. It’s walkable in 1 day for the casual fan, yet enough great stuff to take in for 2 days! It’s not too packed, so bringing kids isn’t an issue- this is a VERY family-oriented show! I have many friends and fellow creators I know who will be there, so I’m thrilled to see them all again! The crowd brings a more relaxed, wander-and-take-it-in type atmosphere, which is PERFECT for us in Artist Alley who want to reach out to new readers. Is that enough reasons for you?! :0)

Team Cul de Sac Panel!

Sunday at 11am in Room 301

Editor Chris Sparks (who won the Humanitarian Award at the Eisners!), along with contributors to the charitable anthology, take to the stage to discuss the successful book and Richard Thompson’s Cul de Sac!

Plushes, anyone?

It’s one of the top questions I get: “When are you coming out with a Z&F plushie?”

With a bunch of friends utilizing the crowd-sourcing fundraising service KICKSTARTER to fund their books and other merchandise for their comics, I have began contemplating giving my readers what they keep asking for… PLUSHES! Zorphbert and Fred, with their cute designs, zippers, and antennae, would make quite a unique plush/stuffed “animal”… perfect for the super fans, and a great attention-grabber at the appearances I do. However, plushes are VERY expensive to produce. You have to order large quantities(usually a 1000 to start) for it to even have a chance at being profitable. However, it seems to be the thing to do, for webcomic creators… so I wanted to poll my readers to see where they stand on the idea. Y’know, before I go crazy setting up an AMAZING Kickstarter campaign!

Tentative campaign schedule: June 2014.

Take the Plushie Poll:

(and be SUPER 100% HONEST! I’m not going to be hurt if plushes aren’t your thing, or you can’t afford to donate/pay for one.. I just need to gather valid data to make my decision!)

Reminder! Guess what returns in UNDER TWO WEEKS?

That’s right, Z&F returns with NEW comics every Monday, starting September 2nd! Mark your calendars!

comicconn

I had a nice little break (for a month or so), but next weekend starts another convention spurt along the East Coast! It kicks off with Comic CONN in Trumbull, CT, at one of the best-run, most jam-packed hotel shows I have done! The majority of the hotel is taken over by comic nerds and fans, with every ballroom filled with merch and vendors, and the hallways lined with the “Artist Alley” tables, featuring both famous creators and indie creators alike! It’s quite the experience, and this mid-size convention is a wonderful kid-friendly event.. so I hope you stop by!

Fanart Friday: Rich Lauzon

RichLauzon

Out of the clear blue sky, without prompting, prodding or pleading, came this awesome piece from Rich Lauzon (AKA “Richtoons“), of the comic Space Pest Removal. Had I not been on my seasonal break, I probably would have done a comic or two about the over-hype of the “royal baby”… instead, Rich does it for me! Easy enough, huh?

So, upon meeting Rich, I had to check out what this goofy-named comic was really all about. Turns out the goofy title pretty much covers it. And you Z&F reader will probably enjoy it too! 2 aliens named Strad and Pelet have one job: capture & relocate space pests. If you enjoy all-ages comics and seeing all the crazy monsters/creatures/space pests that Rich can dream up, head on over and give it a read!

MKAOne For the Parents!

Zorphbert & Fred (and myself) were featured as a family friendly-comic in this article about quality time spent with your kids, creating comics! After all, comics are how many of us started reading, drawing, writing, and using our imaginations! As the author Michael Corley explains, all children are artists… it’s once they become older and start comparing themselves to other that they start telling themselves (or listening to others) that their at is bad and stop growing as artists. Parents and teachers should be there to encourage them to use cartooning as a fun way to express their ideas, stories, jokes, and artistic stylings! Check out this article, complete with video, supply list, and just 7 easy steps, to help your child’s imagination & talents flourish using comics as a medium!

Z&F Featured in a Card Game?!

187 191 192188

You read that right! Zorphbert, Fred, Nettika and the Weird Kid were included in the development of a new “Magic-The-Gathering-esque” card game called WAGON Webcomic Battle! These 4 cards are apart of the “Geek Deck”, and you can purchase the game/deck HERE. The object of WAGON Webcomic Battle is to defend your Life Panels from your opponent’s attacks while trying to destroy their Life Panels. The first player to lose all of their Life Panels loses the game. The Geek Deck is themed around the power of the Geek, which is to combine the forces of deceptively weak-looking characters and use unothodox strategy to overcome seemingly unbeatable opponents. Truly in this dawn of a new beginning, the Geek shall inherit the Earth.

Sounds like a geeky good time to me!

Finally, the New Portfolio Site is HERE!

DGS_logo_colorAs part of my off-season to-do list, my updated portfolio site was a hefty feat to accomplish, but it’s finally completed and LIVE! Dawn Griffin Studios (.com) includes ALL my work: graphic design, illustration, Z&F, the Abby’s Adventures kids books, and whatever else I churn out. Now in a better formatted website (using WordPress just like Z&F does), I can easily update it when something new I deem worthy is created. I’d also like to mention that it’s the perfect place to start if you were thinking about hiring me– as a designer, illustrator, commission artist, or what have you.

  • The About Dawn page gives you a rundown of my history, experience, education and all that good stuff.
  • See my list of Creative Services
  • Check out my Payments/Pricing Page to get an idea of what I charge, or my Commissions Page for something smaller.
  • If you never worked with a freelance artist before and need a briefer on how this all works, this “Teamwork Process” page may help.
  • And of course, there’s the expansive, pretty, diverse PORTFOLIO!
