Think we’ve all been there, no? Thundercats was my favorite cartoon as a kid, but man those old episodes are cheesy when watching as an adult. I am pretty stoked about the new Cartoon Network revamp of the series, premiering in July.

Whatever joy I may find in nostalgia is mitigated by an inexorable sense of loss. Everything becomes bittersweet, but somehow that’s still better than the desolation I envision in the future.
:/
uhhhhhhh…… yeah.. THUNDERCATS HOOOOOO!
good ol’ Derelict. The little ball of sunshine on zfcomics that brings joy to all. ;0)
Derelict, I can’t read your comments without hearing them in the voice of Cary Elwes playing Robin Hood in ‘Men in Tights’. Good work, my friend!
This is very similar to my feelings about SPEED RACER! Speed was awesome when I was 8-10. In later years, I saw how ridiculous the plots and everything else was about the show that it was more FUNNY than AWESOME!
I hear ya, Chris. I’m teetering on the line of “so bad it’s funny” and “so bad it’s gone past funny and went back to bad.” with Thundercats. Especially those closing credits jokes. ugh. *shudder*
Even though we as adults now find the plot holes, rushed story lines, and cheesy jokes some what deflate the grander we had about our childhood cartoon series watch them with your kiddo’s or nieces and nephews and you’ll find that you become that child again that you were. Seeing their eyes light up with wonderment and excitement just transports you back to those feelings you had so long ago.
I’m excited about the new Thundercats and look forward to July 29th.
The neighborhood kiddies enjoy it! We have a Friday night gathering of neighbors to order food and drink, and the kids play games or watch TV. When it’s at our place, the kids play with my old Thundercats figures, and have watched a lot of the series on DVD. It really takes me back- seeing them all select a character and pretend to be them, jumping around on my couch.
I REALLY wanted a space board like the Wily kids when I was young. I believe I made some out of cardboard and pretended I was flying around. Probably jumped off the garage with it a couple times.
This same thing happened to me when the Transformers movies came out. I revisited the cartoon, and they didn’t feel as awesome as I remember. But for thundercats, Mumm-Ra still scares the bejeebies outa me.
doesn’t it seem like most “bad guys” were scarier back then? Nowadays parents are worried about anything scaring their kids, so everything is more squeaky-clean.
As always, I love this strip! I’ve definitely been there with some stuff, but I applaud the network HUB for resurrecting some of my old favorites. I mean, I was a tomboy when I was younger, but I watched the crap out of Jem and the Holograms, and I still love it today. (Although I think as an adult, sometimes I like the Misfits a little bit more…)
revamped Thundercats – Hooooooo! I mean, Noooooooooo!
I never cared for Jem. Seemed like a rocker Barbie, and I steered clear of Barbies. You’re not a fan of the updated Thundercats? I think it’s neat… kind of an anime-Lord of the Rings take on the old series. With a less annoying Snarf.. seems like he’ll be more of a cute pet, who can’t talk other than gibberish. No more “SNNEEEEEEARF!”
Hey! I resent that remark, only because I knew Jem’s real secret-anyone who saw her doll knew Jem was not ‘rocker Barbie’, but a drag queen. Nah, I get you-Jem was my tomboy guilty pleasure. I think it was because this one bad guy in the show sounded like Cobra Commander…
And no, I have no problem with the updated Thundercats. I’m in favor of good cartoons, period, so that my kids know what I grew up with. [/”my generation was better” posturing]
Well, to be honest… I was never a HUGE Thundercats fan. I remember watching a handful of episodes when I was in high school, but even then, I remember saying to my friends that I absolutely LOVED the opening credits. After that, the animation of the regular shows never seemed to match those awesome opening credits.
Then, many years later, I caught an episode (maybe my daughter was watching it) and I realized exactly how bad the episodes were because, for whatever reason, as a teenager, I missed all the re-used or “flipped” cells for the animation. It was sad because as a teenager, I didn’t remember Thundercats being “Superfriends” bad but as an “adult” (and I use the term loosely) I noticed all too well how bad it was.
Hadn’t seen the updated version though so I can’t comment on that. 🙂
Oh come on, Thundercats was an absolute classic! I mean, yeah, the storyline and context was patchy at best, action shots were repetitive, Snarf was the most annoying cartoon character ever created, Lion-O was meant to be a child in the body of a man yet came to terms with this ridiculously swiftly, and there was that awkward sexuality of the Thundercats before they left Thundera (for some reason they were naked on their home planet but not on Third Earth). But aside from that…. uh…. er…. hmm.
The title for the most annoying cartoon character ever has to be Scrappy-doo. As annoying as Snarf is, the inclusion of that characted didn’y kill the franchise.
Very good point. If I owned Scrappy Doo we’d have been making a trip to the vet for some ‘special medicine’ if you know that I mean.
ughhhh… don’t get me started on Scrappy-Doo.
HR Pufnstuf, still as insane today as the acid trip from which it was conceived. Though I don’t find Witchiepoo quite as frightening as I did back then.
