This was more or less my reaction, at first. I honestly totally forgot all the benefits Rick got in the company-wide layoff (including extended health benefits, some severance pay, and possible extended unemployment), and panicked about the house, the mortgage, me having to work 2 jobs, etc. It’s not quite that bad, at least not at first. As for the previous strip, that really wasn’t Rick’s reaction as he got many months warning before his last day. But I would imagine if the layoff came as a surprise, that might be his initial reaction, lol.
On another note entirely, today I have officially left my 20’s behind me. I turned 30! Go me. Now, will you all stop referring to me as “the cute little youngin’?” I’m a big girl, dammit! *stomps feet*
a birthday sketch I did a while back ;0)
ouch, sorry to hear that. when i hit my 30th birthday i met my girlfriend/wife. when she hit thirty herself i offered to find a girlfriend for her. strangely enough she turned me down 😀
you have an interesting girlfriend, lol.
dear dawn,
you’re THIRTY?!! i would never have guessed from your pictures. you look like you couldn’t possibly be that far from your 21st birthday. congratulations on discovering the fountain of youth (which i assume has something to do with being a talented, passionate cartoonist).
i hope you and rick get to celebrate your birthday in style and that you have many more awesome birthdays to come.
hugs,
ana may:)
heh, yeah I have a “baby face”… which is probably a good thing as I get older. I like to think that cartooning keeps me young, too!
Thanks for stopping by, and for the birthday wishes!
yay happy birthday welcome to the “we used to be wippersnappers” club.
wippersnapper is such a great word… wonder where it came from. Thanks Chuck!
yes.. 6 months and then panic (a little) again.
I’ll save it up until then ;0)
More like 3 months, but yes.
eek, 3? guess it depends on how much unemployment you qualify for. Some people from his office got 2 years!
Happy Birthday! The last time I was laid off, I was on my own, which in a way is better because nobody else is depending on your salary. Also I’m still not a homeowner yet.
Thanks Scott! Yeah, the whole MORTGAGE things makes this scary. I like our house. I’d like to keep it, thankyouverymuch.
First of all, Happy Birthday! Welcome to the 30’s club! My wife has struggled with being laid off, reinstated, hours cut, and now back again. I know it’s little consolation, but no matter how bad it gets it can always be worse.
exactly, could always be worse. I could be 50, and we both coulda lost our jobs. My job, thankfully is pretty dang secure.. which is something in this economy. Thanks!
Even though unemployment doesn’t feel very funny, you found a way to make me laugh out loud. Thanks, Dawn, I needed that!
Happy Birthday, too!!! Don’t get too wasted today! 😀
gonna get as lit as my candles! LOL
Wow, scary when stuff like this hits home, isn’t it? We’ll keep following Z&F to see what happens next!
thanks for being dedicated! Maybe Z&F will have to pick up jobs now. aliens disguised as dogs, disguised as dilbert. LOL
Ah, turning 30 is easy! Let’s see, when I turned 30 we had just had our first child, I had quit a full-time job to start up my company and I sat in the front row for a Gallagher comedy show. 30 was nothing.
Happy Birthday Dawn, and here’s a little (very little) present from me…

Byron
as I gushed on twitter, I adore that little bday present, Byron! Thanks so much.
My parents had me at 30, so I am expecting to be bugged about grandkids soon, heh. Also, my family is a big fan of Gallagher! Especially my father. Front row, huh? Didja wear a raincoat or trash bag?
Ahh Gallagher. Listed as number 100 on Comedy Centrals best 100 stand up of all time. Wonder who was 101 and missed the cut.
Happy Bday again DG…even though I wished you one yesterday.
When will those humans learn no matter how upset they get, no amount of arm flapping will let them fly.
Happy Birthday Dawn.
always with the arm flapping! it’s a funny visual ;0)
Congrats on 30! To some of us that’s still a ‘cute little youngin’.
ah well, I’ll take it. I suppose I’ll be wishing someone would call me that in like 20 years…
Happy Birthday! I love the honesty and humour of this strip.
thanks! glad you enjoyed it.
Happy B-Day! My 20’s are over tomorrow – I feel your pain (or, um….30’s are new 20’s, so I guess I shouldn’t feel any pain!).
we are 1 day apart, how cool. actually, happy birthday.. since I’m replying on the 14th.
30 is young, IMO. people tell me so. people who are 40+, but still.
Happy (Belated) Birthday, Dawn! I hope you had a great day.
Sorry about the lay-offs at your fiancee’s job, but I like that you guys have long since been working together to keep your household and finances well. That’s fantastic about the health benefits, as that’s definitely not always the case.
Great strip, as always.
Thanks Winnie! Yeah, we’re hanging in, Rick’s found some side work that earns him some extra cash… and has had a couple interviews here and there, so we’re still hopeful.
Congrats! How does it feel to reach your intellectual and creative peak? (Just kidding! I just turned 30 this year as well).
By the way, this is the 31st comment on this thread. Sorry for wrecking the symmetry.
well, happy “welcome to your 30’s” too, Tony!
I say, screw symmetry. The more the merrier ;0)
Yo! You’ve gotta make a print of that one.
-C.
glad it was that impressive, C. I wonder if anyone would pay for signed Z&F prints? hmm.
