I have to credit some half-link friends of mine for this one. Last week, during what seemed like a monsoon, I heard giggling and screaming from a gaggle of children (or as Zorphie calls ’em, “Beta Humans”) out in the streets. I went to the window to witness this, drawing a smile and flood (no pun intended) of my own childhood memories.

Unfortunately, no, I did not join them. I let the dog out to run around with them however, so the closest I came was to live vicariously through my drenched mutt. I think we adults need to lighten up and play in the rain once in a while. Yes, barefoot. Yes, without a rain jacket or umbrella. Just watch out for those soggy worms on the sidewalk.
I still run around outside in thunderstorms from time to time.
What’s a half-link?
Provided you’re not that “Powder” kid, go have fun. You’ll probably only be struck by lightning once, as they say.
“half links” refers to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.. they refer to the hobbits as half-links.
“Halflinks” should have been “halflings”, credit to derelict for pointing that out to me privately. :0)
There were some instances during my childhood when I played in the rain completely naked. Fortunately, I was young enough to avoid prison but not young enough to avoid getting yelled at by the adults in my family.
LOL! well, your name IS “rainey”, comes with the territory, no? My sister got in trouble for the same thing once, she had an urge to run through the sprinkler, but no bathing suit in sight.
I need to drench myself in a mud puddle and not worry about my clothes getting dirty.
well, if you take advice form Rainey here, no clothes = no MUDDY clothes!
On second thought….
When my wife and I first started dating, we used to run around in the rain barefoot at our college campus. That is until she got a piece of glass in her foot. (one of the problems with doing this on a college) We still had fun in the rain afterwords, just not barefoot.
ugh, totally got a shiver up my spine thinking about that. I think that’s a deep-seeded fear of mine, stepping in/on something while barefoot. Glad to hear it didn’t dampen her spirits!
flip-flops are perfect for this situation. hence, my character’s foot gear.
I still know a lot of adults who run around in it cause they ain’t got sense enough to get out of it. (Right now with all the flooding in Mississippi we just don’t look at rain as a time for a party.) 🙂
I’m sure when it comes to a drencher now most of the Mississippi valley residents start putting the finishing touches on their arks and pulling out their John Boats getting ready to ride it down stream not out of fun but out of survival. After rain storms and flooding like that it sort of sucks the fun out of it for a while.
very true, Bo. I feel kinda bad now.. up here we’re just sick of the rain, but have little actual problems like flooding, etc.
As I typed that, the sun came out.. shining in my office window. huh, thanks!
I love playing in the rain with my boys. The only difference is I actually leave some of the mud behind, they wear all of it. 🙂 Stepping outside our comfort zone and dancing in the rain is something we all need to do from time to time, just to remind ourselves of how simpler life used to be.
kids do seem to be more porous when it comes to dirty substances… they can sop up large amounts, and widely disperse it too!
I love rainy days in the same way as the “Beta Humans”. I don’t know if this is the same thing, but yesterday I went into the grocery store, and the fruit & veggie shower turned on, and “Singin’ in the Rain” started playing – then I started dancing!
that song accompanying the veggie shower always cracked me up. Like, someone had to take the time to program that. heh.
Dance away, Winnie!
You know, I bought two slip and slides for my kids and it wasn’t as fun as i remember it. Of course they weren’t as big as I remember them and I actually couldn’t fit on it! GRRRR. I like that the “humans” are also bringing out the water gun!
such as life, for us full-grown adults. Contact sports have that effect on me now too. “Ow, that hurt a lot more than I remember.” Also, ever jump off the swings at the highest point? Man, that hurts my feet/ankles now. lame.
It does look like fun! I’m afraid of breaking bones though…
remember back when “fear of breaking bones” wasn’t a blip on the radar? You just DID it. Like me, building airplane wings outta cardboard and jumping off the garage multiple times. And, actually, no broken bones. Go fig.
There’s nothing that can bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood like a Slip and Slide! Great strip, Dawn!
Thank you Mark! Unfortunately, that bridge is a lot narrower and not quiet as painless as we remember as kids… as RickTheStick brought up :0P
Sadly, I never actually owned a slip-n-slide. It was probably deemed “too dangerous” just like the Snoopy Snow Cone machine. But my friends had one, and it was AWESOME.
I always did love my SuperSoaker, and you wouldn’t get in trouble if it was already raining. 🙂
Sensible? Who said anything about your humans being sensible, zorphie? 🙂
