This week I am plotting out my special landmark comic for the Big 500th Z&F comic! And you know what, I’ll give away the surprise right now– I am drawing it start to finish, NON-DIGITALLY. That’s right, going back to my roots for #500: fountain pen & ink, adding color with markers & watercolor, even hand-writing the text! It’s been a while, I hope I don’t hurt myself.
Mind you, this special landmark comic isn’t set to post until mid-Febuary. HOWEVER, a lucky reader could get to not only SEE it sooner, but OWN it!
That’s right, the prize for this new “Put Words In Their Mouths” Caption Contest is the 500th Z&F Comic, totally original, signed by me, and shipped directly to the winner to read and enjoy before it even posts!
To enter, all you have to do is write a Z&F comic about SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) …. something relevant and scary when it comes to comics posted online. Just leave a comment with a script for this above comic, and I’ll pick my favorite– based on humor, message and ability to stay within Z&F’s character.
Used as a template is a very old Z&F comic from 2007, #49 I believe… a harmless Fox News joke (which would probably get me in trouble should SOPA be passed, ironically). However, the imagery involves Z&F around a computer using the internet, so it’s fitting for a SOPA joke!
Okay, now some Rules:
1. Remember this is a kid-friendly site, okay?
2. You can post up to 3 entries. Separate comments, please. Only way to enter is via the comments.
3. If you need balloon sizes or amount of balloons changed, to better work with your script, that’s okay. Just notate in your comment.
4. The previous winner is invited to play, but is ultimately ineligible this round (sorry!)
*the previous winner is Chris Otto …. Feel free to play, but I can’t select yours!
Panel 1:
Z: OK, so let’s do some research on this SOPA and PIPA stuff.F: I’m way ahead of ya. Just bringing up some info on the Representatives who support it now.
Panel 2:
F:Oh my have you seen what these bills are for?
Z: So this SOPA and PIPA is to protect the Internet by censoring it more and blocking access at the governments discretion?
Panel 3:
F: Oh my, look at this!
Z: Well it appears that each of these supporters have a lot to hide. Scandal, Scandal, Scandal….
Panel 4:
Z: Seem to me they need to spend more time cleaning their own house and worrying a little less about others. Oh my, is that Chris Dodd!? No wonder he wants SOPA passed so bad.
heh heh, nice spin there Todd ;0)
Pannel 1
Z: So I hurd SOPA is evil. What does the online say?F: Well Zorphy… It seems that the internet is “revolting.” I don’t blame them
Pannel 2
F: What’s this?! They took down megaupload…
Z: Those fiends! And people are scared of ALIENS?
Pannel 3
Z: Oh a press release… My someone hit HIM with the ugly stick…
F: Sopa’s UGLY!
Pannel 4
Z: shame, they could be saving kids in Africa… But instead they’re trying to do what everyone thinks WE’RE doing! We should vaporize them.
F: AHHH MAKE THEM STOP! EVIIIIIIIILLLL!!

Panel 1:
Z: Censored?
F: Censored.
Panel 2:
F: Under review by legal team.
Z: Translation: Censored
Panel 3:
Z: Is any site left?
F: All gone
Panel 4:
Z: Congress built the information superhighway to no where
Boy, if that last line doesn’t say it all, I don’t know what does!
It’s easier for me to show what the comic might look like instead of describing it. Here’s my entry:
Thanks Chris! Great job on this. I wondered who/how many would use the censored bars :0)
Panel 1
Zorphbert: Here we are in Rainey’s apartment.
Fred: He’s always on this computer. Oh, here’s some of the websites he likes.
Panel 2
Fred: Hey, that’s us!
Zorphbert: You just hit upon some of the online comics he likes to read.
Panel 3:
Zorphbert: Strange! It appears he enjoys reading our strip but he never made any efforts to store or copy it.
Fred: The S.O.P.A. law Lamar Smith passed probably has something to do with that.
Panel 4:
Zorphbert: I never thought a bill would make copyright laws that strict.
Fred: I wonder if it’s a violation of copyright to look at and memorize comic strips.
that’s the next step, MINNNNND CONTROLLLLLLL! ha ha, thanks Rainey for playing!
Hoookay… after much staring at the wall and contemplating my belly button, here is what I came up with:
Panel 1
Zorphbert: From what I understand, these primitive primate hairless monkeys have this thingy called… ‘The Internet’
Fred: Wowwee and golly goo, I bet we can log our information reports to our home planet computer using it
Panel 2
Fred: Hey, hey, hey, lets try it out. Like, this primitive tin box actually connects to… ‘The Internet’
Zorphbert: Hokey-dokey and hot-diggity-dog, access our home planetary computer system ‘megaupload’
Panel 3
Fred: Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww…
Zorphbert: What the tentacle is that? Ew, ew, ew and ewwwwwwwwww…
Panel 4
Zorphbert: Apparently, the hairless monkeys have something also called ‘megaupload’. That makes a poopy mockery of our planet
Fred: Call the feds, and have it shut down…
Panel 1:
Z: So what is this SOPA thing all about?
F: Apparently the human leaders are afraid of pirates…
Panel 2:
F: And the pirates are fighting back
Z: Oooh, with swords and cannonballs?
Panel 3:
Z: Wait, I don’t see any pirates. Just old men saying words they don’t understand.
F: Like “cyberspace”
Panel 4:
Z: Are they afraid of ninjas too? What about ghosts?
F: It’s like watching raccoons trying to figure out how a radio works
Z: Vibrant online commumities… a global marketplace…
P: Free and unfettered exchange of ideas…
z: The government must be so proud of their part in creating the internet.
p: I wonder how they’ll celebrate it?
Z: SOPA?
Z: Censorship? Really?
P: Everything… going… black…
Great contest idea, Dawn, but even better prize!
