This is something I always found kind of hypocritical about campaigns during economical distress. If a candidate ever decided to take all the money donated to his/her campaign, and give it back to America in a different way (help pay off the debt, give to charities, etc), and then get their message across using cheap alternatives like using social networks and video blogs…. I’d have to give them serious props.
No kidding. The candidates are spending milions upon millions of dollars, to win a job that pays $400,000.
All the while talking about the countries money. Think about it for a minute…
Time to watch “Brewster’s Millions” again. They make this point handily.
But then how would you get to the “real voters”? That’s actually not so jokey a question. So many people, myself included, don’t access social media. Again, many people don’t own a computer or don’t use it much, especially if they don’t have a good internet connection. Going out to people is the one surefire way candidates have to reach them. Obama got young voters out in force in 2008 using social media, which is fantastic, but they’re one demographic. Maybe in another generation, this will be more of a possibility.
That being said (let me get off my soapbox now!) I’ve heard stories in the news of candidates for other offices that didn’t pay for meals in the diners they and their staff essentially closed for a few hours. If you’re going to spend that much money for a race, spend a few bucks more and pay for what you take. And give a good tip!
NYC may be way expensive, but I’ love living here when election season comes around. I know who I’m voting for and don’t care about the ads or rallies.
Using social media and rejecting the old media is exactly how Trump won the election. He did begin the ultimate rock star tour that’s still going on today with his Trump Rallies though.
Hi Bailey! Thanks for your comment. I do think you’re right! Funny…. this comic is 4 years old, so this is actually referring to Obama and Romney! funny, eh?
