Wait a minute. WAIT. ONE. MINUTE.
Fred’s trying to be a matchmaker? Offered “digits” in exchange for an iPad under-the-table? Zorphie is still hanging out in his pants? There’s a *gasp * GAY guy in this comic???!!!
Calm down people. Especially when it come to the last point. I know it’s relatively risqué to include any homosexual or even a reference to a homosexual in an all-ages comic strip (and I think this is very sad, by the way), but if Lynn Johnston of For Better or for Worse can do it, so can I.
This little iPad story has become a bigger iPad story. See how it all started by going HERE.
I’m pretty sure you’re safe, unless you were angling to have your strip taught as part of the school curriculum in Missouri. Then you’re SOL.
LOL, well THAT’S not gonna be happening, heh.
I also think that’s sad and shouldn’t be considered risque. But I’m also from Missouri… 😉
bleah, what do you Missourians know? ha ha JK, but yes, I agree that it’s kinda of sad that a comic like this could be offensive to some people. Just the mere mention of someone being gay.
It’s been years since I heard the word “gay” to mean “happy” and even these were older people talking about speech habits of the past. Makes me wonder where Fred is getting his language research.
probably from an old dictionary! Plus, considering the fact that these aliens may not have “sexes” in the same way that we do, this may be a concept that’s hard to grasp for an innocent character like Fred :0)
It shouldn’t be controversial! People love who they love. It’s just one more form of bigotry society has yet to overcome!
I agree! But it’s the truth. Mainly, my concern was parents again… if their kids who read Z&F came to them asking what “gay” meant and that had yet to be discussed. It’s an ongoing issue with me, I am terrified of accidentally exposing an “adult” topic to kids who don’t know about it yet (either via my comic or in general conversation).. and then dealing with some pissed-off parents who wanted to shield their kids from it for as long as possible. Not how I would raise my kids, but I have to be respectful of others. Basically, I’m afraid of my big talkative mouth getting me in trouble LOL.
But I thought Fred was, err nevermind…
I think the whole gay thing is not a big deal unless they (the creator) makes it one. I thought Lynn Johnston was a little self serving and I even lost a ton of respect for her when she decided to go back and reboot the series. I say create a whole new one!
